Crystal was the first Bichon at our house. She was also our first attempt into the dog showing arena. Looking back, it's amazing that we received any points, let alone a championship, especially with those first few wins. My grooming was AWFUL! Crystal was a great show dog, earning 11 Best of Breed wins over 4 months of very limited showing. During this time, Crystal was all owner handled and after her first couple of grooming sessions with a Bichon groomer, I learned how to groom (and saved some money in the process).
Crystal never had any puppies. When we were thinking of breeding her, we had her hips x-rayed (to check for hip dysplasia) and we found out that she was dysplastic in her left hip. She was spayed shortly thereafter.
Crystal also had a great sense of humor in the obedience ring - especially when performing obedience exercises on carpet with an audience cheering you on (even when you are supposed to be doing a normal pace off leash but you are running the Bichon Blitz around the inside of the obedience ring). After two tries and 2 excusals for "Uncontrollable Behavior", my husband gave up trying to show her in obedience and gave her to me to show. Crystal was so funny, every time she would sit, she'd look to the left, then to the right, and slowly sit on her haunches, so she wouldn't get her cute little bum cheeks dirty.
